Walking The Length Of Sweden

Could you brave resigning your job for adventure?

In 2018, Oskar Henriksson, a native of Skara, embarked on an extraordinary journey from Smygehuk in southern Sweden to Treriksröset in the north. Making a bold decision, he resigned from his job as a consultant in Gothenburg to pursue this adventure.

“I felt the need for an adventure and had been in the same job for a long time. It was time to look for the next step,” he shared.

Henriksson commenced his trek through Sweden on March 24th of that year, encountering unexpectedly cold conditions at the outset due to the lingering winter. Despite facing numerous chilly nights in his tent, he remained committed to covering 25 kilometers each day, aiming to reach Treriksröset by the end of August.

Typically beginning his journey at nine in the morning and concluding by five in the evening, Henriksson spent his days setting up camp, preparing meals, and keeping in touch with family and friends.

Speaking to SVT News West, Henriksson reflected on the challenges and rewards of his journey, expressing his determination to continue despite fatigue.

To undertake this trek, Henriksson had to resign from his job since he couldn’t take a leave of absence. However, he viewed this as an opportunity for a much-needed break and to explore new possibilities.

Henriksson’s family and friends were supportive, though some expressed concern about his safety as he ventured into more remote areas.

Looking ahead, Henriksson was excited to explore his hometown area in Skaraborg during spring and to traverse the majestic mountains, with nearly half of his journey passing through these rugged landscapes.

Despite occasional bouts of loneliness, Henriksson remained connected to others, frequently engaging with people along the way and being accompanied by friends on certain stretches of his journey.

On his 157th day on the trail, Henriksson successfully reached Treriksröset, marking the northernmost point of his remarkable expedition.
