In 2015, Risto Piispa, a 33-year-old father from Finland, embarked on a remarkable journey that defied conventional limits. Prompted by his son’s innocent curiosity, Risto traveled from Finland to Africa on a jetski, demonstrating the power of determination and the enduring spirit of adventure.
Risto’s journey began in the Finnish capital, Helsinki, and concluded 40 days and 1,910 miles later in the Spanish city of Ceuta, located on the tip of the North African coast. Riding his Sea-Doo RXT 260, Risto meticulously documented his adventure, sharing his progress with friends and family.
The genesis of this incredible voyage stemmed from a simple question posed by Risto’s son: “Is it possible to drive a jetski from Finland to Africa?” Rather than dismissing the notion as fanciful, Risto embraced the challenge, embarking on an odyssey that would not only test his limits but also raise funds for a noble cause.
The journey was more than a test of endurance; it was a mission to support the refurbishment of a children’s hospital in Helsinki. Motivated by his personal battles and a desire to make a difference, Risto aimed to provide much-needed medical equipment and improvements for the hospital.
Risto’s story is deeply intertwined with his own health struggles. In 2008, at the age of 28, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given a prognosis that suggested he might have only seven years to live. This life-altering diagnosis instilled in him a resolve to live life to the fullest and fulfill his dreams. Reflecting on this period, Risto said, “I decided you should always try to fulfill your dreams because one day it might be too late.”
Throughout the journey, Risto received minimal assistance, relying on a campervan that followed him by land to provide refueling and rest stops. His route took him from Finland to Estonia, then down the European coast past Latvia and Lithuania, eventually reaching Poland. From there, he navigated the waters past Germany and along the Spanish coastline until he reached Ceuta.
Risto’s epic journey was not without its challenges. He encountered various obstacles, including falling off his jetski multiple times and navigating the open sea. Despite these setbacks, his determination never wavered.
This voyage also saw Risto break the Guinness World Record for the longest open ocean journey by jetski. The previous record was held by Portuguese national Frederico Rezende, who completed a 963.04 km journey from Lisbon to Madeira in 2013. Risto’s accomplishment is a testament to his resilience and adventurous spirit.
